The basic kit comes with a 1lb grit kit which will polish 15lb of rock and 2lbs of crushed agate as filler rock to use with stones you already have.
Comparing Rock Tumblers & Polishers
Hobbiest rock tumblers are made from sheet metal bases, with sturdy belts meant to last, and rubber barrels that obsorb the majority of the noise. Whereas toy rock tumblers are generally light weight plastic, and some have a very thin aluminum base. Tumblers such as Harbor Freight (TM) and Smithsonian (TM) rock tumblers come with an extremely limited and short life warranty. That's because these tumblers are not made to last long term. See our article on Harbor Frieght vs. Lortone rock tumblers here. Lortone and Thumler's rock tumblers are designed to last a long time. While both brands are good choices for any rock enthusiast we have found that Thumler's brand rock tumblers have larger motors, and tend to last twice as long! Which is why we carry Thumler's Rock Tumblers in-store and online.
Toy rock tumblers often come with pre-tumbled rock which means that after the first batch you have to use their rock or risk putting a hole in your barrel. Our rock tumblers have barrels made from the same type of rubber as car tires ensuring you can tumble any rock you find anywhere! Some rocks may not ever get a high gloss but you won't damage your rock tumbler by polishing them! You can also break glass and make beach glass, polish coins and jewelry, and show the effects of weathering and erosion with a Thumler's Rock Tumbler! Have more questions about rock tumblers?
